Pyriscence is a culture and politics magazine based in Western Canada with an international outlook. The term pyriscence refers to the phenomenon wherein a seed can only be released through heat or fire—new blossoms require the destruction of old structures, and the forest is renewed through burning. The project of Pyriscence takes this natural process as a model for critique: putting pressure on interpretive objects—encompassing a variety of cultural, political, social, economic phenomena—challenges established epistemologies and ideologies. The topics covered are necessarily diverse but all share a commitment to baring and dismantling our inhabited structures and thus making visible the potential of new forms through combustive criticism.
